Drawing and art in general help developing the children’s creativity, motor skills, self-esteem and benefits in various other ways. Here are some basic tips for encouraging children to draw and involve in art activities.
Create a space for art activity
The art activity space could be at any size and anywhere according to your living arrangements. It could be outdoors or indoors, at a garage, an attic or at the corner of the living room, anyway it has to include a desk and drawers or shelves to store the drawing materials. An easel could be a nice addition and a magnetic board or some other way to display the children’s creations. It is important to establish a cleaning and organizing routine at the end of each drawing session.
Encourage the process and not the result
Parents should not expect their children to create professional artworks and instead focus on the process itself. This can be achieved not by offering automatic praises on each creation but by paying attention to the kid’s effort. For example, instead of saying “what a beautiful painting”, say “I’ve noticed you like the blue color” or something similar that shows you really looked at the painting.
In any case, do not display your dissatisfaction from the result. If the child declares that it is a drawing of a tree, do not tell him that he should have drawn it differently. Anyway, it is better to focus on what was actually drawn and not what you expect him or her to draw.
Save and display the children’s art
Another way to show appreciation to the children’s work is by saving it and displaying it. Some parents maintain a cardboard portfolio filled with the kids’ drawings and paintings, while others attach selected artworks to the refrigerator door, the important thing is to show the kids that their art experiments are valued and appreciated.
Draw with the children
Joining the kids in their art activity could be a fun and engaging activity, as long as you do not force your point of view on the children. If you feel that your art skills are insufficient, you can learn how to draw using drawing books or even taking art classes to improve your drawing abilities.
